Notes 8.5 upgrade workshop

On Wednesday and Thursday of this week we [PSC] and IBM hosted a Notes 8.5 upgrade workshop. The workshop was held at IBM Innovation Center downtown Chicago and it was a great event. Thank you everyone who found 2 days in their busy schedules to join us for the workshop. The event was “sold out”. We had no empty seats in the room and unfortunately we had to turn away a few people who tried to register at the last moment. Not to worry, we are planning to hold more workshops during the summer. Please come to the PSC site for event information and registration.

The workshop focused on showcasing the new and exciting features of Notes and Domino 8.5: things like DAOS, ID Vault, Shared Logon, XPages. The agenda is a good mix of presentations and hands-on labs, so not only did the attendees get to listen about the new features, they got to feel and touch them, practice setting them up and using them.

All in all, a great event. I’m looking forward to hosting a few more of these during the summer.

Currently, we’re looking at hosting 1 workshop in Schaumburg at the PSC office on June 24 – 25.

In addition, we’re planning to host another workshop downtown Chicago at the IBM center just before MWLUG on August 25 – 26.  Seating will be limited again, so please stay tuned for registration announcements.

Tip – Quickly get to a folder in Lotus Notes

After all this years of using Lotus Notes as my mail client, I have finally discovered that the View/Folders pane supports type-ahead.

All you need to do, click on a view or a folder to select it.  You have to make sure that focus stays in the View/Folders pane.  If you’re already inside of your Inbox, click on the Inbox again.  Then just start typing the name of the folder you’re looking for.  The highlight will be automatically positioned to the first matching folder.  Thank you, UI designers for adding this feature.

I don’t know what versions it is applicable to.  Works for me on 8.5.  What a great feature.  If you’re like me and have folders nested several levels deep, it is much easier to just type the name as opposed to clicking through all the plus sign icons to expand parent folders.

Gotcha: the behavior of the View/Folders pane gets a bit funny when you’re drilling down into folders nested 3 or more levels deep.  In my case, the pane just goes all grey and take a while to come back.  Could be a built-in limitation or a quirk of a Mac.

Notes 8 lost my secondary calendar

Actually, I am not sure when this happened, whether Notes 8 broke it or 8.0.2, but I clearly remember it being there in version 7. My Regional Settings still show a secondary calendar selected as Hebrew. But my calendar only shows standard US dates. A bit of a problem when you’re trying to figure out the days to take off for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Quick way to locate a folder in Notes 8

Don’t know why it took me so long to discover something to obvious as this…  When moving an email to a a folder, in the ‘Move to Folder’ dialog box, just start typing the name of the folder you’re looking for.  It will quickly position the selection bar to that folder.  It works with any folder no matter how many levels deep.  No more scrolling and expanding folders for me.  Love it!

The same trick also works on a BlackBerry when filing a message into a folder.
